The People Pleasers

I don’t like people pleasers. Not at all fond of them. I’m talking about the ones who pretend that they like what you like. They say that they love the same book, same movie, same song, same artist, etc as you. You’ve never heard them speak about that subject ever before but the moment they come to know that it is your choice, they go something like, “OMGG! SAME! I like it/her/him SO much.. like SO SO SO much.” And I call this bullshit. Utter shit. I’m speaking from experience about a certain acquaintance. This person always likes the same things as I do.. always. And it annoys the hell out of me. I’ve never heard you mention that author and all of a sudden I’m supposed to believe that he is your favourite?!I never heard you speak about him ever and now he is your “jam”? Doesn’t make any sense to me. I just wish that the person would stop doing it. Seriously. It’s getting nauseating. I can see that day very clearly in the future. The day when I go all ballistic on this acquaintance. And I don’t want that to happen because I don’t want to hurt the person’s feelings. So instead of blazing out with all my imaginary guns of words, I’m going to type it all away. Hoping that this is going to work.

I’m aware that this post is me ranting but I needed to get this out. I really needed to. On another note, I came to know a very interesting thing today. Apparently, everyone and everything around us has an “aura”. Like, physically. It is a physical thing. I never expected it to be. With this, I’m going to end it here.

Go and give a hug to a person. Could be anyone. Your mum, dad, friend, grandpa, girlfriend, boyfriend, aunt, cousin… doesn’t matter. Just go and embrace someone tightly. You know never know, this random spontaneous act of yours might just be the reason for their first smile today. 🙂

Words : An Eternal Magic

There is something really comforting about country music. The melodious guitar riffs, the soothing voices, the meaningful lyrics… the entire package has a very home-y feel to it. I was listening to the likes of Mumford And Sons and Kacey Musgraves and the tiredness from studying so many different circuits through the course of the afternoon seemed to vanish into the thin air. As I was listening to them, I had this slight unconventional thought that poems are just like the lyrics of a song. The only difference is that no one has ever bothered to make them dance around a melody. I don’t know why but this just made me feel sad about poems, in general. Just imagine, if someone set a soothing Ed Sheeran sort of guitar riff to a John Keats’ poem.. and a Coldplay’s “Magic”-like video to go along with it. I know that I’d watch it. I’d probably hum it through the course of the day. Soulful lyrics are nothing short of magic.

And maybe that’s why I like the world of words so much. It can create magic like none other. Put them coherently and it can make you cry. It can make you laugh. It has the ability to change your thought process. It can influence your actions. It can change YOU. There is no greater power in the world. It can be a novel, novella, short story, poem or even a song. And the end of the day, all of them have the same life-line : Words.

The Voice Of The Unnoticed

India recently topped the World Hunger List with a whopping and a heart wrenching 194 million hungry people. There are so many of us who waste food on a daily basis. Kilos of food goes out the accumulated dustbins across the length and breadth of India as millions sleep with an empty stomach. Free food is given in government sponsored schools but that hardly helps much. Tons of grains and vegetables rot whilst the poor farmer fights with the miser of a distributor for the right market price. The Government should need to look more into this matter and make sure that not even a single grain goes to waste because of under payment of the farmer. Incidentally I also discovered that by paying a meagre amount of 750 rupees only, we can sponsor the food of a child living in a village (my source was a “Chings” advertisement in which a popular icon asks us to donate money). If there is any Indian reading this, I implore you to ask your parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents everyone to donate the sum. It isn’t much. Their wallets will still be heavy. They’ll still be able to buy their favourite clothes.. will be still able to go and enjoy a weekend movie at the multiples.. will be able to dine at their favourite restaurant. The only difference that it will make is that they’ll be sleep with a lighter heart. So go ahead.. ask them to donate for the cause. The worst that can happen is that they will scold you. Just remember that the scolding would be for a good cause. If you have the money, then go ahead. You can donate too. You’ll feel good.. I promise. 🙂

Another thing that has been haunting me lately is the over-permissible levels of lead and MSG that has been found in Maggi. It is, without any doubt, the most popular noodle in our country. Childhood here is synonymous with this brand of instant noodle. So this discovery is frightening. I wish the food controlling and securing authorities would actually do their work instead of simply taking banking their fat pay cheques all for having done nothing.

Apart from these two thoughts haunting me for the past couple of days, I have been happy lately. I have been positive and I have been studying more. Because it is the knowledge of these very books that have made me the person I am today. Not studying wholeheartedly would be disrespecting my very roots. I have been listening to some great music and I am in a balanced position, I think. Also, I came across a few interviews of Anupam Roy lately (for those of you don’t know, his songs are kind of my jam now) and he always gushes about Sting. So I decided that I need to give Sting a listen too. I heard his “Fields Of Gold” and I definitely get where Roy gets his inspiration from. FOG is a pretty darn good soulful song so go ahead and check it out if you haven’t already. It is nice to know where your favourite people draw their inspiration from. 🙂

P.S. I found a REALLY cute picture of Anupam and his girlfriend, Piya. I have never said this for anyone.. but here goes. This is the cutest couple that I have ever seen. Hands down. Looking so happy and beautiful. 😀 I wish them all the happiness in the world! 😀

Theory Of Relativity

Lately I have been thinking about life, just in general. And I have come to the conclusion that it is just a BIG unfathomably deep ocean of relativity. We have to work hard to be successful in any field. And that makes sense. But what we tend to forget sometimes is that it ALSO depends on how well others perform.

Suppose you get 92 out of 100 in some test. It is pretty good, right? Now, if there are 25 others who have got more than 92 then your marks somehow losses its value before others. But if there are only, say, 2 more people who have got more than you then you will be hailed by all. And this is what I mean, life is a big big big pool of relativity. You have to do good.. there is no alternative to that. But others have to perform worse than you to give you that sense and security of “doing good”. And I hate this.

I absolutely hate this.

And the worst thing is that I can’t do anything about it. None of us can. There is no security for anyone in this world. Doesn’t matter if you are a world famous scientist.. you might just wake up tomorrow to find out that you have Alzheimer’s. Or suppose you are a famous actor but tomorrow there just might be someone better than you. And this is all so RELATIVE.
I’m not sure if this makes any sense at all but I just needed to let all these thoughts out. Writing all this doesn’t change anything. Life is unfair. All I’m going to tell myself is – suck it up.

Why Don’t You Let Me Be Free?

All of you dear readers must have noticed quite obviously that these days I have been gushing over the songs of a certain someone. Anupam Roy. Yes, I’m going to write about him today. Particularly, I’m going to write about one particular song of his. It was released a few years back by his band : The Anupam Roy Band. I came to know about the song just a few days back. The thing which surprised me was that it was an English song. I didn’t have any idea that he sings in English so quite obviously, I went to YouTube to check it out.
Second Sex.

That’s the name of the song.
Now.. now .. reign in your thoughts. I know that you’re thinking that it is a vulgar song. But let me tell you something, it is anything BUT vulgar.

In December 2012 there was a horrific horrendous psychotic gang rape case that took place in New Delhi. I’m not going to go into any details about it because it is bad. BAD. Just thinking about it horrifies me. This particular case ignited something in our citizens and there were wide scale protests against it. New laws were implemented. Steps were taken. Now, this wasn’t the last rape case. We have those in a daily basis.. cities, villages, everywhere. Only a few are brought into the notice of the media. Many cases are never reported. The condition is BAD. I’m saying all this because we have a number of masochist and chauvinistic males in our country. Not all, I stress. But the amount of people who fall into the category is quite large. Women are not given enough security and somehow the victim is always made to be at fault. Apparently, girls should not wear skirts or jeans according to them. We should not be out at night. We should not use mobile phones. It is basic legitimate shit but comments like these are always made.

In the song, ARoy sings about how the society thinks that the girls need to be protected. He says that she isn’t your mother/daughter/sister.. she needs no protection. She needs to live in a secure and safe society. You need to provide her that. It is a basic right that she has. We, as a society, need to make sure that she feels safe living. She should be free to do anything that she wants without having the need to look over her shoulder. We need to give her the freedom of being. He expresses this opinion because according to him, rape is not an individual’s problem. It is the problem of our entire society.

And he is 100% right because rape is indeed the problem of the society. Just debating among ourselves on national television about it isn’t going to change anything. We need to take steps. We need to start putting others before us the next time we see a girl getting eve-teased. Slap him, kick him, hit him, abuse him, shout at him in front of everyone.. I dont’ care! Just gather some f* courage and DO SOMETHING instead of being another apparently unaccountable person in the crowd of people who just don’t give a shit.

Here’s the link to the video : http://www.google.co.in/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CCQQtwIwAQ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DZLdcKMKGQXk&ei=vTlnVZicMdK3uAST64LABQ&usg=AFQjCNF8FSJZuFIwVlLnIR8SVVhzuUebrg&sig2=Hab6ad0JdeU3rL6Ue7X_IA&bvm=bv.93990622,d.c2E

Go listen to it. And please do take a minute to read the note that Anupam has published along with the song.

Also, there was a lady who commented that why he has called the song “second sex”. I think it is to bring the focus on the sexist population in our society who think that females come after males.

P.S.

I got retweeted by him today! 😀

Survival

The Modi government completes one year and I have got only one humble request to them : I want to feel safe as I walk down the streets. So please make sure that the female population of our country is not robbed off of this basic human right.

On another note, I got my maths test paper back and I have done well. So super happy about it. I wish that this momentum continues. I had a physics test today and I think I have definitely done above average. I have to work on the bone-breaking projects again and maybe I will do an all nighter today. I will do all the graphs and the stupid diagrams as long as my headphones are on to help me survive through all this torture. Because music helps. Period.

Be You. Because you are one in a gazillion. 🙂

Because Brainy Is The New Sexy

I can use many words to describe today – inspiring, relaxing, encouraging, productive, joyous.
My cousin’s board results came out today and he has done unexceptionally well! He has improved so much and has made my family proud. This has inspired and encouraged me to do better too. He aimed for the sky and he has come out with rainbow colours. Now, I need to make sure that I do the same too next year.

I have been working on my biology practical file for the entire day and have been successful in writing over thirty pages. I am nearly done with all the writing.. just two pages left. Then I have to start on all the anatomy diagrams.. I’ve got a whole bunch of them left. Phew!

On another note, I spent my afternoon with my headphones on (and doing project work, of course.. no, I don’t play truant 😛 ) listening to a Bengali album released last year by none other than, Anupam and it was a fresh change. Out of all the eight songs, not a single one of them is about love. It is about society, stereotypes and everything normal that happens in our day to day lives. He speaks out against misnomers and labellings that we give to people without ever thinking twice about it. It was very melodious with lots of classical Indian instruments playing in the backdrop. But a couple of songs have elements of punk rock in them too.

Listening to him was a nice change for another reason. After a long time I listened to a “mature” voice as in not a singer whose song is mainly focused on the teen / early tween generation. He is a mature guy talking about mature things in a slightly sarcastic way directed to the society. It is good.. it is great. I should listen to his other albums too.

My friend, Sonika, mentioned in her blog a few days back that elder people have a lot to offer in terms of knowledge, insight and understanding of this crazed up world. I realized she was indeed correct while I pondered over all his lyrics and their meaning. Elders are cool.. much much much more than you and me.

For the time being, I am going to wrap it up here. I need to go and continue with my practical work. Also, I have to study for a test tomorrow.

Be good everyone. 🙂
